Frequently Asked Questions

All CUHK undergraduate students admitted in 2022-23 and thereafter shall complete the two online courses for fulfilment of the University Core Requirements for graduation. Undergraduate students admitted before 2022-23 may take the two courses as elective courses.

No, you cannot. Undergraduate students admitted before 2022-23 can only take UGCP1001 and UGCP1002 as elective courses to fulfil the unit requirements for graduation. The two courses cannot be taken to satisfy University General Education requirements.

Students are encouraged to complete the two courses in their first two years of study. They can take the two courses in any year of study.

Students will not be centrally pre-assigned to take the two courses in specific teaching terms. However, individual major programmes may make such an arrangement.

Although UGCP1001 is not a prerequisite course for UGCP1002, it is recommended that students complete UGCP1001 to better understand different perspectives of China before taking UGCP1002.

In 2022-23, UGCP1001 “Understanding China” will be introduced in the first term and UGCP1002 Hong Kong in the Wider Constitutional Order in the second term. After launching, the two courses will be offered every term (including the summer session).

UGCP1001 and UGCP1002 are two one-unit online courses. Their video lectures and online assignments will be uploaded to Blackboard for students who have enrolled in the courses to gain access to them. Please refer to the “Course Schedule” for the uploading schedule of the video lectures and online assignments.

The video lectures of different modules will be uploaded to Blackboard in sequence. They will be available for students enrolled in the respective course to view at any time after being uploaded.  To better schedule their learning, students are advised to pay attention to the uploading schedule of the video lectures to complete the online assignments promptly. Please refer to the schedule posted on Blackboard for more details.

The online assignments of different modules will be uploaded with the video lectures in sequence. They will only be available for specified periods. Please refer to the schedule posted on Blackboard for the submission deadline of each assignment. One must complete all the online assignments to obtain the “Distinction” grade.

The consultation sessions are optional. These sessions are not lectures; they are Q&A (questions and answers) sessions for students to raise questions and reflect on the contents of individual modules.

The links for online registration of the consultation sessions will be posted on Blackboard for students to sign up. Students are encouraged to input their question(s) into the online registration forms. Please refer to the “Optional Consultation Session” on Blackboard for more details.

Students who fail the course may retake it. If students fail the course but subsequently obtain a “Pass” or “Distinction” grade when retaking the course, only the passing result (“Pass” or “Distinction” grade) will show on the transcript upon graduation.

"Distinction", "Pass" or "Failure" will not be counted in the calculation of GPA. Similar to the current Pass/Failure grading, students who have obtained a grade of “Distinction” or “Pass” in UGCP1001 or UGCP1002 shall earn the unit of that course. The unit(s) of course(s) repeated/retaken shall count only once towards the fulfilment of course units for graduation.
