UGCP1001 Understanding China
UGCP1002 Hong Kong in the Wider Constitutional Order

Two required courses on China
for fulfilment of University Graduation Requirements

Introduction

-

The history of China is both rich and complex, as is its development in the modern era. The growing influence of China on the world stage, as one of the largest economies, a prominent player in international relations, and a major centre for knowledge creation, highlights the need for an integrated and multi-disciplinary understanding of its past and present.  The course, UGCP1001 Understanding China, brings together several perspectives on China in addressing the following topics: cultural and intellectual roots, epochal events in history, modernisation and social change, economic development, and science and technology.

The course, UGCP1002 Hong Kong in the Wider Constitutional Order, views the overall development of Hong Kong from the perspectives of the nation and the wider constitutional order in China. It highlights the interlocking relations between law, national security and national development in the context of state capacity building in modern Chinese history, and introduces the fundamental constitutional principles underlying the One-Country-Two-Systems framework, the Basic Law of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong National Security Law.

All CUHK undergraduate students admitted in 2022-23 and thereafter shall complete two one-unit online courses, UGCP1001 “Understanding China” and UGCP1002 “Hong Kong in the Wider Constitutional Order”, for fulfilment of the University Core Requirements. Undergraduate students admitted before 2022-23 may take the two courses as elective courses.

In 2022-23, UGCP1001 Understanding China will be introduced in the first term and UGCP1002 Hong Kong in the Wider Constitutional Order in the second term. The two courses will be offered every term (including the summer session) after launching.

Details of the two online courses are available in CUSIS.  Students can enroll in the two courses through CUSIS like other courses during course registration and add/drop periods.

Students enrolled in the two courses can refer to the latest course-specific information posted on Blackboard for more details.
